2021 KCS Holiday Express

In 2001, a group of warm-hearted volunteers invested more than 8,000 hours to transform retired rail cars into a smiling tank car named Rudy; a flatcar carrying Santa's sleigh, reindeer and a miniature village; a gingerbread boxcar; the elves’ workshop; a reindeer stable; and a little red caboose. For 19 years, the festive KCS Holiday Express train brought Santa Claus and his elves to communities throughout KCS’ U.S. rail network in free, public events. Due to the pandemic, in 2021 like 2020, KCS will not operate this train, which traditionally draws large crowds. See the 2021 KCS Holiday Express Launch Video here.

KCS will celebrate the 21st anniversary of its KCS Holiday Express program and partnership with The Salvation Army with a fundraiser to benefit the Salvation Army in 21 communities on its U.S. rail network.

"KCS is pleased to celebrate 21 years of Holiday Express benefiting The Salvation Army in communities throughout our U.S. rail network,” said KCS president and CEO Patrick J. Ottensmeyer. “While it’s still not safe to gather for visits with Santa and tours through the holiday train, the true stars of the show are The Salvation Army and the work it does all year round.”

In this pandemic, the fastest increasing area of need is for families who will be unable to pay their rent or mortgages and face eviction. The donations The Salvation Army will receive through the KCS Holiday Express will keep families in their homes and keep hope marching on for them into 2022,” said Major Kelly Collins, divisional commander of The Salvation Army Kansas and Western Missouri Division.

Contributions to the KCS Holiday Express fundraising campaign for Salvation Army will be distributed among 21 communities on the KCS network: Kansas City and Slater, Missouri; East St. Louis, Illinois; Pittsburg, Kansas; Ashdown and Mena, Arkansas; Poteau and Stilwell, Oklahoma; Houston, Laredo, Port Arthur, Victoria and Wylie, Texas; Baton Rouge, DeQuincy, Gonzalez and Shreveport, Louisiana; and Corinth, Jackson, Meridian and Vicksburg, Mississippi.
